Punctuation and speech marks
This week, among many other things, we have been taking a closer look at punctuation in writing. We focused particularly on speech marks, and on how and when to use them (it's very important not to forget to close speech marks when you've opened them!).
We practiced our writing skills by making up dialogues. We chose to write about Romulus and Remus' argument, which we had acted out the week before.
As far as speech marks go, there was an assignment in this week's homework about the use of speech marks. Some of the works have just been put on the blog. So, don't forget to have a look at the Wonderful Works page!
Focusing on speech marks is not a good reason to forget anything about all the other punctuation signs we already know about!
So, don't forget to keep it all in mind when you're writing.
Exclamation mark (!): Use it when you want to show a strong emotion (surprise, anger, shock, happiness...)
Example: Snow White was an amazing show!
Question mark (?): Use it when you are asking a question.
Example: How are you?
Full stop (.): Use it at the end of any sentence which either is not a question or doesn't show any real emotion.
Example: I'm 8 years old.
Comma (,): Use it when you are writing a long sentence, or when you are making a list. When you feel you should make a short pause for a quick breath of fresh air, you probably should put a comma.
Examples: When I get home, I'm going to brush my teeth.
My favorite colors are blue, pink, red, yellow and green.
