Money and coins

Money and coins

Since we came back from Christmas break, we have been learning about coins, in numeracy.

We learnt to distinguish al the types of coins one can use at the shop. We found out there were 8 different coins, going from 1 pence to 2 pounds.

We've also started learning that we can use all those different coins to make up any amount of money by putting them together, even when the price is an odd number. Really, it isn't too difficult as it's all about basic additions.

What shapes would you say the 20p and the 50p coins are? How many sides can you count?
How many 1p coin would you need to have £1?
You have the following coins in your wallet: 1p, 5p, 2p, £2 (2 pounds), 20p. How much money do you have in total? With that money, could you buy a £3 toy?
You want to buy a book, which costs 40p. Which coins would you need to purchase this book? (there is more than one possible answer!).
What do you think coins are made of?
